Pflichtmodul - Landscape Ecology in urban planning

Structural change in Kalk © A. Timpe

The landscape forms the basic fabric of the city. Natural features and planned green infrastructure shape urban structures in visible or invisible ways to this day. At the same time, the city creates its own structures of non-built spaces consisting of streets, squares, gardens, parks and other types of open space. Alongside interior spaces such as the home, the workplace and others, open spaces form an essential component of the urban living space.

Recklinghausen-Süd serves as a case study with practical relevance, where the Green Infrastructure Strategy for the Metropole Ruhr, which is currently being developed, is to be translated into concrete planning at district level. To this end, we will be working together with the Ruhr Regional Association and the city of Recklinghausen. The knowledge acquired on Green Infrastructure in the first part of the course will be used to design a GI concept for improving the quality of life in this area in the second part
