Food Mapping 2.0
Food Mapping in the Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg
The production and supply of regional food in urban areas is a highly complex system that requires many actors and infrastructures to guarantee sustainable food security for all inhabitants. So far, however, there are no consistent standards to visualize the spatial relationships of an urban food system. To deal with the topic of food in spatial planning, however, a comprehensive set of data and a consistent planning language is required that can provide information on the multi-layered spatial relationships and their contents.
Taking the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region as an example, we intend to investigate and break down the aspects of regional food around the topics of stakeholders, production, processing and marketing, value creation and the importance of regional and supra-regional references and prepare them for food mapping. In addition to the systemic view of the food flows in Nuremberg, the team will develop proposals to visualize the spatial references on a food map. For this purpose, existing visualization methods will be examined in advance with regard to their applicability, information content and their potential for use in planning.
Based on the food map, we will then create formats for workshops in the space that will help to better connect previously researched stakeholders on specific topics.
The model for the "Food Dialogues" originates from Aachen's partner city Cape Town and has been held there regularly for several years. The goal is to better network the topic of regional and healthy food at the stakeholder level and to put it on the agenda of politics and the community.
